Kochi: The US has detained an Indian origin Green Card holder academic, Badar Khan Suri, who is facing the threat of deportation for suspect links to a terrorist outfit,media reports said.
With his wife being a Palestinian and her father a former minister in the Hamas government, the US authorities suspect Suri having links to a designated terrorist organization.
A postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, Suri was detained by masked agebts of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at his home in Arlington, Virginia.
The DHS agents reportedly informed Suri that his visa had been revoked before taking him into custody.
The DHS accused Suri of “actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media.”
DHS also accused Suri of having “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas.”
Suri met his wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, in 2011 and married in January 2014 in Delhi due to problems in Gaza.
After studying at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, Suri was teaching “Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia” at Georgetown University.
Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian student at Columbia University, left for Canada after DHS linked her to pro-Palestinian campus activities.
