22 nations to protect Hormuz strait

Kochi: Australia is among 22 countries who have joined hands to protect the shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amidst ongoing fighting in the area, media reports said.
The move comes after Iran imposed restrictions on the navigation through Hormuz strait which is used for transporting a total of 20 million barrels of oil on a daily basis. This roughly translates into 20 per cent of the global supply.
Iran has warned that vessels passing against Iran’s interests.
The 22 countries are UAE, Bahrain, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy
Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia
Nordic and European nations like Sweden, Norway, Finland
The coalition has underscored the importance of freedom of navigation under international law.
