Kochi: A major earthquake has killed at least 46 people and injured 700 others in Indonesia’s Java on Monday afternoon, media reports said.
The 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit the island for several seconds creating huge losses to men and materials.
It impacted about 75 km away from the capital Jakarta. The authorities denied that there was no threat of a tsunami.
Many houses and a boarding school were damaged. Two hours after the quake 25 aftershocks were recorded.
Indonesia is located in a highly seismically active zone vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanoes.
