Kochi: The state-level Independence Day was celebrated in Kerala sans rendering of Vande Mataram amidst Centre issuing new protocol on its rendition on Saturday.Chief Minister V D Satheesan hoisted the national flag at Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The Centre’s July 9 protocol makes it mandatory to play the National Song before the National Anthem at events where the two are to be performed.Satheesan had the other day declined to give a direct answer when he was asked whether Vande Mataram will be played on Independence Day. He said the people should “wait and see”. The omission had already triggered a political controversy in the state.
