Mumbai pornography racket case: Raj Kundra sent to police custody

Kochi: NRI Businessman Raj Kundra, 45, who was arrested in connection with a case related to allegedly publishing pornographic films by luring and tricking aspiring women actors, was sent to police custody until July 23 by a Mumbai Court.

Husband of bollywodd actor Shilpa Shetty, Kundra would be interrogated for more details about the case, media reports said. The Mumbai crime branch had registered an FIR in February in connection with the case and had arrested nine persons whose sustained interrogation led to the arrest of the British businessman, Raj Kundra. Kundra was questioned on Monday after which he was arrested. Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said Kundra appears to be the key conspirator of this. There are enough evidences against him, he said.

The police said that women were trapped to act in pornographic movies by offering promises of better prospects. Some of the accused arrested were engaged in streaming porn films by taking a fee. The Maharashtra Cyber police had last year registered a similar case against Kundra whose anticipatory bail is before the consideration of the court in coming days.

The legality of Kundra and Shetty’s investment in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team Rajasthan Royals using an offshore company of Mauritius was questioned by various agencies in 2009. The Delhi Police had questioned Kundra in connection with the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case involving the arrest of some Rajasthan Royals players.

Kundra was ranked as the 198th richest British Asian by Success in 2004.
