Kochi: Legendary Malayalam playback singer P Jayachandran, 80, passed away in a hospital in Thrissur today, media reports said.
Jayachandran was undergoing treatment for cancer for sometime.
Jayachandran has sung more than 1,600 songs in different languages.
He was born on March 3, 1944, in Ravipuram, in Ernakulam. Jayachandran belonged to the Royal Family, late Ravivarma Kochaniyan Thampuran, who was also a musician, and the late Paliyath Subhadra Kunjamma.
Jayachandran had an attraction towards playing traditional percussion instruments.
He sang his first song in 1965 ‘Oru Mullapoo Malayumaayi’ for the film Kunhali Marakkar.
His ‘Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi’ shot him to popularity.
Jayachandran’s other popular songs are Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi, Neelagiriyude Sakhikale, Thiruvabharanam Charthi Vidarnnu, Ramzaanile Chandrikayo, among others.
