Centre bans PFI

Kochi: The Centre has banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) and its affiliates for five years after finding their activities unlawful, media reports said.

The government has declared the ban under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Some of PFI’s founding members were leaders of the proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), and had association with the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), media reports said.

The banned outfits include Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala, the reports said.

The action against these organisations came in the wake of two successive raids in their offices and houses of some of their leaders. Many leaders have been arrested in this connection.
