Kochi: An event organised to express solidarity with the incarcerated journalist Siddique Kappan in Kozhikode today was cancelled as per police direction, media reports said. The function was cancelled after the police got reports of a possible clash and suggested the organisers suspend the seminar planned at Kozhikode town hall. M K Raghavan, MP, of Congress, and K K Rama, MLA, of RMP, were among those to attend the function which was to be inaugurated by Munavvar Ali of the Muslim League.
The BJP had cautioned the participants against attending the meeting. The saffron party had also alerted the NIA and state DGP about the function. The recent arrest of a large number of banned Popular Front of India (PFI) and the banning of the PFI had led to police keeping a close eye on similar functions. Kappan, was accused as a PFI activist and was arrested under UAPA in two cases in October, 2020. He got bail in one case and is still in jail in the other case.
