Kochi: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar inaugurated an event held to condemn Emergency on the 50th year of its imposition even as Left outfits tried to disrupt the event seeking removal of Bharatamba’s image from the venue at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.
The event was organised to condemn the imposition of Emergency on its 50th anniversary.
The SFI, DYFI and KSU activists gathered in the University in large numbers protesting against the display of the image of Bharatamba.
Despite the police and University authorities suggesting cancellation of the event, the organisers refused to budge and held it as planned.
The Governor arrived on time and inaugurated the function and released a book. He also honoured RSS leaders who were jailed during the emergency.
Arlekar spoke in length about the hardships faced by people of the country due to police atrocities during emergency.
Strongly criticising late Indira Gandhi, he said the Nehru family considered the country as their monopoly.
The event was organised by the Sree Padmanabha Seva Samiti. Kerala University Registrar K S Anilkumar had also requested the organisers to remove the image to
hold the event in a peaceful manner.
However, Raj Bhavan said the Governor will boycott the function if the portrait was removed.
