Kochi: A naval officer was sentenced to multiple punishments including seven years of Rigorous Imprisonment.The military court fined Commodore Sreekumar Pillai Rs 75 lakh and terminated him from service for corruption.Pillai, who served as the commanding officer of INS Zamorin at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, will face additional two years of imprisonment if he defaults in paying Rs 75 lakh, On Manorama reported.The verdict was delivered following court-martial proceedings that began at the INA in the last week of April. The verdict will be executed after getting the nod from the Chief of the Naval Staff.Pillai is lodged at a cell at Ezhimala from where he will be shifted to the Central Prison in Kannur after the Naval Chief gives green signal to the verdict. He was arrested on November 3, 2025, while accepting a bribe from a contractor.The military court examined around 100 witnesses during the trial. A separate complaint was also lodged against Pillai alleging that he threatened a witness by sending hired men to the witness’s home in an attempt to force him to change his statement.Pillai faced 75 charges. Naval Intelligence examined his financial transactions, including those relating to real estate and gold purchases. The court found that he had amassed around ₹2 crore through illegal means.
