Kochi: Three decades after losing the ODI World Cup in 1992 to Pakistan, England is all set to avenge the defeat in the finals of the World T20 at Melbourne on Sunday.
England thrashed yesteryear WT20 champion India by 10 wickets in the second semi finals to qualify for the finals today.
India made 168 runs losing six wickets in 20 overs, while England effortlessly made 170 in 16 overs to register its victory.
Winning the toss, England decided to bowl and it paid the dividends as India lost two quick wickets of K L Rahul and Captain Rohit Sharma. As usual, former captain Virat Kohli, 50, and all rounder Hardik Pandya, 63, came to the rescue taking the score to a respectable total.
England’s Jordan took 3 for 43 while Rashid took 1 for 20 and Woakes 1 for 24. Chasing the target of 169, England made 170 with four overs remaining.
England’s Jos Butler played captain’s innings scoring 80 runs and A Hales 86. They wound up the score in 16 overs proving their superiority.
India gambled with old war horse B Kumar who gave away runs at an average of 13. His bowling appeared ineffective. This forced captain Rohit Sharma to not give him more than two overs. Inexperienced Arshdeep Singh appeared helpless in front of English batsmen. Veteran spinner Ashwin was still expensive giving away 13.5 runs per over.
