Kochi: Panic spread in the state as media flashed news about a blue alert being sounded in Idukki following water level in Idukki Dam touching 2,390.86 ft mark against its full reservoir level of 2,403 ft today.
The KSEB has said that there was no need to panic as a blue alert is sounded as per the protocol. Blue alert is sounded for the authorities to take precautionary measures. This will be followed by an Orange alert only when the level increases by another six feet which would normally take several days to happen only if there is incessant rain. As of now, there is no rain in the catchment area and hence inflow is also less. The dam which has a catchment area of 650 sq ft has a huge storage facility and it would take huge inflows.
People who are yet to recover from the shock of the 2018 flood are keeping their fingers crossed to avoid a similar situation. The weather office has forecast rains for today and tomorrow. Orange alert has been sounded in Palakkad and Malapuram.
