Mild tremors in Idukki, Kottayam

Kochi: Mild earthquake was reported in Kottayam and Idukki region on Wednesday, media reports said.

The tremor was felt at about 12 noon. The shocks were felt in Poovarani, Idamattom, Bharananganam, Arunapuram, Poonjar and Panachipara in Pala in Kottayam.

When contacted, KSEB tremor monitoring centre official at Idukki dam told thenewsskerala.com that the tremor was negligible and was recorded at 1.7 on the Ritcher scale.

The tremor took place much deep from under the surface of the earth. Deeper the tremor, lessor is the impact felt on the surface of the earth.

The tremor lasted for about 15 seconds. The epicenter was traced in Meenachil taluk in Pala.

There are no reports of any casualties or loss to property. India is divided into four seismic zones of 2 to 5. Most vulnerable areas come under zone 5.

Kerala is categorised under zone three which is slightly vulnerable to tremors. The midlands are safer compared to hilly and coastal areas.
