Fresh CBI probe into Balabhaskar’s death

Kochi: The High Court of Kerala has ordered a fresh CBI probe into the death of noted violinist Balabhaskar in 2018.
Setting aside Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court’s December 23, 2025 verdict rejecting a plea for further probe sought by Balabhaskar’s parents, the High Court in an order of October 9 directed the CBI to take up the probe.
The High Court directed CBI to entrust the investigation to an officer of “proven integrity” not below the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police.
The court directed the CBI to issue necessary orders within two weeks of receiving a copy of the judgment.
Balabhaskar died on October 2, 2018, from injuries suffered in a car accident on September 25 at Thiruvananthapuram.
The state police probed the case first after which it was handed over to the CBI after a suspected connection of a gold-smuggling network in the case.
His wife, Lakshmi, and the car driver Arjun K Narayanan survived.
The CBI wound up the investigation in 2021 saying that it was an accident. On October 5, 2023, the High Court directed further investigation to probe a conspiracy or a connection between gold-smuggling activities and the accident.
The court identified 20 suspicious circumstances that required further examination.
