Interim bail for Kejriwal

Kochi: In a blow to the ED, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case until June 1 in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, media reports said.

The Apex court directed Kejriwal to report before the police on June 2. A Division Bench has discouraged the Chief Minister from exercising his official duties during the bail period.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) opposed the bail saying that if “unscrupulous” politicians are given bail for campaigning, none of them can ever be arrested, as elections are an “all-year-round phenomenon” in India. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 after the Model Code of Conduct for the general election was declared on March 16.

Kejriwal’s lawyers said that he can take part in election campaigning. The Apex Court rejected ED’s plea to prevent Kejriwal from speaking about the alleged scam.
