Kochi: Police ran to safety when migrant workers from places including North Eastern states bashed them midnight last night near Kochi on Saturday.
The police team rushed to the place after getting information about a clash between the inebriated workers at Kizhakkambalam, media reports said.
As soon as the police control team reached the spot, the unruly workers pounced on them and assaulted them with sharp objects, the reports said.
The police escaped from the place leaving behind their jeep which was damaged by the workers. The cops alerted the Kunnathunad police station from where a team led by a Circle Inspector reached the place, but were treated even worse. The policemen were terrorized by the aggressiveness of the workers who set ablaze the police jeep.
The matter reached the Superintendent of police, Aluva Rural, Karthik who led a large contingent of police to the spot and arrested all the criminals.
The workers were employed in a famous garment making and exporting company Kitex group which had been in the news recently after the promoter Sabu Jacob pulled up a fight with the state government for harassing him by raiding his offices.
The region is an industrial area wher a large number of those from North Eastern states and even Bangladesh work in different units.
