Railway says ‘work or quit’

Kochi: The Railways have issued a stern warning to its top bosses to increase their efficiency or face the music.

The alert was sounded by the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Railway Board chairman and CEO V K Tripathi at a meeting of Zonal Managers and heads of production units in the Railways headquarters from 10 am to 10 pm during February 19 to 22, media reports said.

Showing no leniency towards the alleged lethargic attitude of some officials, he said that those who find it difficult to work could take VRS and quit.

He said there will be no extension of time for completion of projects which have been pending for a long time.

He said the bosses could no longer enjoy luxury in their offices as they would have to be on the field for 22 days a month just like an ordinary railway staff, the reports said.

He said the officials concerned should present the progress report of all projects every month, the reports said.

The tough stand of the minister is said to be his decision to show the door to railway board member Rahul Jain due to alleged inefficiency.

Jain was appointed by former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal some of whose programmes were dumped by Vaishnav.

Vaishnav had decided to cut down on the import of rakes and decided to build Vande Bharat rajes at home under the Make in India programme.

The message given at the meeting was that those causing hindrance to the Prime Minister’s vision to make railways the engine of growth of the country will lose their jobs.
