Kochi: Diplomatic baggage gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh today alleged that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan helped a UAE native leave the country in 2017 after he was booked for carrying a banned satellite phone, media reports said.
She told reporters in Kochi that the accused was held by the CISF at Nedumbassery airport on August 4 while trying to leave the country with the satellite phone which was banned in India, the reports said.
The CISF personnel handed him over to the Nedumbassery airport police station where he remained until August 6.
Flashing the copy of the FIR, she said that the
UAE Consul General contacted her and sought the intervention of the Chief Minister to release the Egypt-born person.
Swapna contacted Chief Minister’s then Principal Secretary Sivasankaran in this regard and within ten minutes Sivasankar confirmed doing the needful.
She said that she gave an affidavit that was issued by the Consul General for the release of the accused who was detained from August 4 to 6.
Thereafter there was no investigation against the accused. It is not known what he did during his stay in India.
