Kochi: Water will be released from over century-old Mullaperiyar dam at 10 am on Friday as the level crossed 136 feet on Thursday.
The first warning was issued by Tamil Nadu on Thursday when water reached 136 feet mark.
The average inflow into the dam was 6,592 on Thursday evening. The water released from the dam reaches human inhabited areas of Vallakadavu in 20 minutes. It further passes through Manjumala, Vandiperiyar, Mlamala, Shanthippalam, Chappath, Aalady, Upputhura and Ayyapankoil where it enters the vast reservoir of Idukki by flowing for two hours.
Meanwhile, the Idukki dam has 1,031 million cubic metre (MCM) of water which is 71 percent of its full capacity of 1,460 MCM.
The water level in the dam was 2,375 feet against its full level of 2,402 feet.
Rainfall in the Idukki dam region was 68.4 mm and inflow into the dam was equal to producing 49.7 million units of power.
Meanwhile, water level in Chalakkudy river continued to rise as two shutters of Kerala Sholayar were opened.
Earlier, opening of Peringalkuthu dam after Tamil Nadu released water from Parambikulam had triggered sudden increase in water level in the river.
