Kochi: A total of 154 persons suffered injuries when a firecracker warehouse caught fire during fireworks at Theyyam festival at Anjootiambalam Veererkavu temple in Nileshwar in Kasargod in North Kerala in the wee hours of Tuesday, media reports said.
Eight persons suffered serious injuries.
Many people were also injured in the stampede. The crackers were stored in large quantities for the festival.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals in Kannur, Kanhangad, Kannur.
The event was held during a preparatory ritual for the Moovalamkuzhi Chamundi Theyyam to signal the start of the Theyyam season in North Kerala.
The tin sheet roof was blown away in the impact of the blast. Police have taken the temple president and secretary into custody in connection with the incident.
Over 750 such accidents have taken place in the last 20 years in the State.
