Kochi: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was Friday voted to power after an uprising ousted the previous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024.
BNP led by late Prime Minister Khalida Zia’s son Tarique Rahman won 209 seats out of the 297 announced.
Jamaat was in second position with 68 seats and the National Citizen Party with six seats stood on third position.
Hasina’s Awami League was barred from participating in the elections, and she fled to India after 15 years of alleged authoritarian rule.
The general elections were also accompanied by a national referendum on “the July Charter”, aimed at reforming state institutions. The Election Commission on Friday said voter turnout was 59.88 percent.
