Kochi: The Congress-led government has decided to recommend a CBI probe into the suspicious death of senior government official Naveen Babu who was found dead in his quarters in Kannur the day he was planning to take a train to Pathanamthitta.
The decision was taken after considering a plea from Naveen Babu’s family which had expressed lack of trust in police investigation.
Former Kannur district panchayat president P P Divya is an accused in the case. Police suspect Naveen committed suicide after Divya accused Naveen a corrupt official at Naveen’s sent off function which she attended uninvited, media reports said.
Divya is accused of supporting one P S Prasanth whose application for starting a petrol pump was rejected by Naveen Babu as Additional District Magistrate. Prasanth is accused of being part of a mafia involved in real estate, quarry businesses.
The police had yesterday submitted a report on further investigation into the case as directed by Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court admitting Naveen’s wife Manjusha who had sought reinvestigation.
The police have listed 13 new witnesses in the report.
Police also submitted the CCTV footage of the area near Naveen Babu’s official quarters.
Manjusha had approached the court seeking a further investigation, pointing out 13 alleged flaws in the first charge sheet.
Naveen Babu was found hanging in his official quarters on October 15, 2024, shortly after he was branded a corrupt official by Divya.
