Cops arrest 51 in Nagpur riots

Kochi: Fahim Khan, president of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP),
and 50 others were booked in connection with the Nagpur riots, media reports said.
They were produced before a city court which remanded them to police custody until March 21.
Over 30 people including police personnel were injured in the riot.
Khan, a key suspect in the case, is accused of leading a mob to the Police Station to lodge a complaint against the alleged burning of a green shawl.
Khan is accused of recording a video outside the Ganeshpeth Police Station, criticizing the police and the minority commission and circulated it on social media groups.
There are charges of some of the rioters misbehaving with women cops and other women.Public property including vehicles were vandalised and torched by the rioters.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up by deploying a total of 2,000 police personnel in sensitive areas while special police teams patrolled under the command of a senior officer. Curfew has been clamped in several areas.
Some of the rioters were accused of misbehaving with some other women, including police personnel, during the incident.
The rioting reportedly began around 4pm on March 17 and continued until approximately 11.30pm, media reports said.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said “there is no need to glorify Aurangzeb in Maharashtra. He is a blot on our history,” Shinde stated in his closing remarks in a heated legislative council.
Shinde confirmed that four DCP-level officers were among the injured in Nagpur violence, the reports said.
