Kochi: In a blow to the Congress, a court in Gujarat today rejected Rahul Gandhi’s prayer seeking a stay on his conviction by another court in a criminal defamation case filed by Purnesh Modi of BJP.
The Additional Sessions Court in Surat made the ruling, disqualifying him from attending the Lok Sabha.
The Congress leader was convicted by a Magistrate court in Surat on March 23 for his remark “Modi surname” made at an election rally in Kolar in 2019.
The Magistrate had convicted Gandhi for criminal defamation for two years in jail.
Gandhi was elected from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency.
