Kochi : The Vilambaram (announcement) ceremony marking the beginning of Thrissur Pooram festivities was held at Vadakkunathan Siva temple in the presence of ten of thousands of people on Monday.
The idol of Naithala kavilamma mounted on top of Ernakulam Sivakumar elephant opened the southern end gate of the Vadakkunnathan temple signaling the opening of the mega festival.
People in thousands gathered in the southern end to witness the event.
The southern entry door opens twice a year with one being during pooram.
The door is kept open for Kanimangalam Shasta to enter the temple on the day of Pooram (main festival) tomorrow.
The elephant carrying the idol of Devi on its back offered reverence to the lord of Vadakkunnathan temple thrice.
Naithala Kavilamma set out on the mission at 8 am mounted on top of Ernakulam Sivakumar elephant from Naithala Kaavu temple at Kuttoor located about six kilometers from the Vadakkunnathan temple.
The procession to the Vadakkunathan temple was accorded reception by performing orchestra at Manikantanaal.
