NDA shines in Bihar polls

Kochi: In a major achievement, the BJP-led NDA led in 197 of the 244 seats, sending signals that the Saffron party would continue in power in Bihar.
Congress proved to be a liability for the Opposition I.N.D.I.A led by the RJD was leading in 40 seats.
Polls were held on 6 and 11 November 6 and 11 with voter turnout at 66.91% which was the highest since Bihar’s first elections in 1951.
The election was held amidst Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi accusing the BJP-led front of misappropriation in voting using the Election Commission.
He had accused the BJP front of coming to power in Maharashtra and Haryana through malpractices.
The BJP fought the polls with its traditional ally JD(U) both of which rule the state JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister.
The Opposition I.N.D.I.A is led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) backed by the grand old party Congress among others.
The Bihar polls serve as a precursor to several other key state state elections next year in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry.
Nearly half of the voters are women, and the state recorded its highest female voter turnout in history at 71.6% this year.
The ruling and Opposition alliances had offered financial assistance schemes to woo women.
The election was conducted after a
revision of voters’ list carried out by India’s Election Commission a few months ago. The commission released a list of 74.2 million voters in September, weeding out 4.7 million alleged fictitious voters.
