Kochi: State governments across the country have gone on alert mode after Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a meeting to discuss the new variant of COVID 19 Omicron.
Chairing a high level meeting, Modi asked officials to review plans to ease travel restrictions from different countries, media reports said.
As the World Health Organization has expressed concern over the new variant, the Prime Minister told officials to be proactive and people should be more cautious. They must take proper precautions, maintain social distancing and use masks properly, media reports said.
He asked the officials to monitor international arrival as per guidelines with special focus on countries at risk.
He said genome sequencing must be broad-based. Intensive containment and active surveillance should continue in clusters reporting higher cases.
He underscored the need to provide support to states take up vaccination against corona.
Awareness needs to be created among the public on ventilation, air borne behaviour of the virus.
