Kochi: Indian star shuttler P V Sindhu has secured the second medal for the country in Tokyo Olympics by winning the bronze. She became the first Indian woman to win a medal in successive Olympics today. The same feat was achieved by Sushil Kumar in wrestling in the men’s section. Sindhu defeated China’s He Bing Jiao in the bronze medal match (21-13, 21-15) held today evening.
The first medal for India was won by Meerabai Chaanu. She won silver in weightlifting. Boxer from Assam Lovlina Borgohain have assured India a medal by entering the semi-finals in the 49 kg category. Sindhu had won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sindhu lost to world number one Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei on Saturday in the semi-finals.
Sindhu, 26, became world champion in 2019. In 2018 and 2017 she was a losing finalist at the world badminton championship.
