Kochi: The 62-year-old Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan of Congress will be the new Chief Minister of Kerala.
The Congress leader Deepa Dasmunsi who is in charge of Kerala announced the election of Satheesan as leader of Congress Legislative Party at a press conference in New Delhi.
Satheesan has been representing the Paravur Assembly constituency in Ernakulam since 2001.
Satheesan succeeded Ramesh Chennithala as Congress Leader of the Opposition following the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election.
He also served as Vice President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Satheesan was the chairman of Mahatma Gandhi University Union during 1986-1987.
Satheesan made his political debut in 1996 when he lost to Communist Party of India candidate P Raju in the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections from Paravur.
Satheesan was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2001 when he was practising as an advocate in the Kerala High Court.
Satheesan led the United Democratic Front (UDF) to a landslide victory, securing an absolute majority with 102 seats in the 140-member assembly in 2026.
