Congress chief election tough

Kochi: Differences have surfaced in the crisis ridden Congress over the candidature of party presidentship with two senior MPs in Kerala opposing the nomination of Shashi Tharoor, media reports said.

Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, said that it was Tharoor’s unilateral decision to contest, the reports said.

While K Muralidharan, MP, said those who had allegiance with Nehru family would get support of the Congress in Kerala. It is not necessary that all those file nominations would contest the polls, the reports said.

Echoing the same stand, KPCC president K Sudhakaran said that the party leaders would vote on the basis of their conscience.

But things have changed as many PCCs have favoured Rahul Gandhi for the post and the wave is in favour of Gandhi family, he said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is expected to submit nomination on September 26 even as party president Sonia Gandhi has granted her permission to Tharoor to contest, the reports said.

It is learnt that Sonia Gandhi saying that it is open for anyone and that Rahul Gandhi would not be a candidate.

The party High command had directed Gehlot to make preparations for contesting the election.
