Kochi: In a major move, the Uttarakhand Cabinet gave its nod to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill on the basis of recommendations of a high level panel, media reports said.
The bill will now be tabled in a special session of Uttarakhand Assembly from February 5 to 8, the reports said.
A five-member panel led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai had submitted the UCC draft to the government.
The UCC aims to give a legal framework for marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws without any discrimination.
Uttarakhand is heading towards becoming the first state to adopt the UCC if it is cleared by the assembly. The move has whipped up strong reactions from political parties and religious outfits in Uttarakhand, the reports said.
