Mohanlal seeks to save film industry

Kochi: Actor Mohanlal and former president of Malayalam actors’ outfit A.M.M.A today said that those who were found guilty in the film industry should be punished.

There are chances of mistakes happening in the industry like it happens in other areas, he told reporters while speaking at Thiruvananthapuram after launch of Kerala Cricket League.

Even as he welcomed Justice Hema Committee report, the veteran actor wondered over power group working Malayalam film industry mentioned in the report.

He said he was not aware of such a group.Responding to reports of Mohanlal and other top actors maintaining silence on the Justice Hema Committee report, he said he was not underground and was in Gujarat, Mumbai and Chennai in connection with his wife’s health issues.

Mohanlal said that he was not encouraging indiscipline in the industry. He said he had appeared before the Hema Committee twice. He expressed concern over targeting A.M.M.A for each and every thing. He said the governing body of AMMA had quit after getting expert opinion from lawyers and senior artists.

Stating that the Malayalam film industry was built with great difficulty, he appealed to save it has it provided livelihood to thousands. Nothing should be done to bring the industry to a standstill mode. It is also involved in a number of charity activities.

Many actors including cpm MLA M Mukesh, Siddique are booked under non bailable charges of rape following complainants by the victims. Since its formation in 1994, the outfit has been in the middle of controversies culminating in the organisation landing in factionalim with actor Thilakan accusing AMMA of conspiring to deny him roles in 2010 for criticising top actors including Mohanlal.

AMMA finally expelled Thilakan on disciplinary grounds. Filmmaker Vinayan, who was one of those in Thilakan camp, faced same treatment as Thilakan following which he approached Competition Commission of India (CCI) in 2012. In 2017, the CCI imposed a total fine of ₹11.25 Lakhs on the AMMA and Film Employees Federation Of Kerala (FEFKA) for denying opportunities to Vinayan, preventing artists from co-operating with Vinayan, and rejecting his films from theaters.

AMMA’s worst time was in 2017 when it was criticised harshly for protecting actor Dileep despite being an accused in the actor abduction and abuse case of 2017. The outfit split with female artisrs including popular actors like Revathy, Parvati Theruvath floating WCC to fight for the cause of female artists.
