Kochi: Noted Malayalam film director and cinematographer Shaji N Karun, 73, passed away at Thiruvananthapuram, media reports said.
He debuted with the film Piravi in 1988, which won the Caméra d’Or – Mention d’honneur at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. He won the National Award for Best Director for Piravi.
Shaji was the premiere chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.
He was executive chairman of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) from 1998 to 2001.
Swaham (1994), Vanaprastham (1999) and Kutty Srank (2009) are his other popular films.
He won two Kerala State Film Awards for Best Director for his films Swaham and Vanaprastham. He was the Chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation from 2022 to 2024.
Anasuya Warrier is his wife and Anil and Apppu are sons.
He returned to Thiruvananthapuram from the capital of South Indian Film Industry in 1976 and got a job in Film Development Corporation.
He worked with noted filmmakers G Aravindan, K G George and M T Vasudevan Nair as a cinematographer.
