Kochi: Suspected remains of humans were found at mass burial sites near Nethravathi river in Dharmasthala cited by a former sanitation worker who turned a whistleblower.
The excavation was done by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the presence of Karnataka government departments officials.
The whistleblower claimed that there were 13 spots where he had buried bodies of mainly women and girls between 1995 and 2014.
The remains were found on the third day after the SIT began excavation on July 29.
Reports of mass burials surfaced by June end when lawyers representing the whistleblower held a press conference to make the matter public.
The whistleblower lodged a police complaint on July 3, and the FIR was registered the next day.
The Belthangady court recorded his statement under Section 183 of the BNSS on July 11, after which he agreed to lead investigators to the alleged burial sites.
