Kochi: The BJP has accused the Congress of including the name of party leader Sonia Gandhi, in voters’ list before becoming Indian in 1980, NDTV said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the Congress colluded with the Election Commission then to commit voter fraud by making Sonia a voter before getting citizenship 45 years back, Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur claimed.
Born Sonia Maino in Italy in 1946, Sonia’s name was added to the voters’ list a year before she became an Indian citizen.
BJP’s Amit Malviya had earlier posted on X hours earlier a ‘photocopy of the extract from electoral rolls of 1980. “If this isn’t blatant electoral malpractice, what is?”
Sonia, who married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968, was added to the voters’ list while the Gandhi family lived at the official residence of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
This was a clear violation of the law, he said
Her name was deleted from the list…” after an outcry in 1982, Malviya said claiming that her re-inclusion in 1983 – after securing
Indian citizenship was also fraudulent. He claimed the cut-off date was January 1, but Sonia became a citizen in April.
Responding to the allegations, the Congress’ Tariq Anwar told NDTV Sonia Gandhi had not asked for her name to be included in the voter roll, and that it was the poll body officials of the time who did so.
