Kochi: The BJP councillors sang the National Song Vande Mataram while those belonging other parties rendered the National Anthem during Independence day function on Saturday.
Mayor O Sadasivan hoisted the National flag following which began singing the national anthem.
When members of the ruling CPM and those belonging to Congress-led front began singing the National Anthem, 13 BJP councillors started singing the full version of National song Vande Mataram.
The Mayor and other councillors left the venue even as the BJP councillors stayed back to complete singing Vande Mataram.
The BJP had informed the Mayor in advance that its councillors would sing Vande Mataram.
