Red alert sounded in Idukki dam

Kochi: Red alert has been sounded in Idukki dam where the water level has zoomed to reach a height of 2,382.52 feet on Saturdayv.
The authorities are planning to release water once the level touches 2,383.52 feet.

The KSEB is making preliminary arrangements for the opening of the shutters.

Water released from Idukki will reach Periyar river in Ernakulam, in about eight hours and flow into the Arabian sea.

The rise in water level is due to the release of water from Mullaperiyar dam yesterday.
However, there is heavy rain in Idukki district where a Yellow alert is in force.

Six dams in the district are already open. Only Idukki and Kallar dams remain to be opened.

A group of three dams make the Idukki dam from where water is released through Cheruthony dam while the remaining two dams of Kulamavu and Idukki dams have no shutters.

Water released from Idukki dam through Cheruthony dam passes through Cheruthony river to reach Vellakayam where it joins with Periyar river.

It then flows through Thadiyambadu, Karimban, Chappaathu, Chelachuvadu, Keerithod Pambla, and forest areas to reach Ernakulam border and passes through Periyar Pambla dams which are already open.

A tributary of it also flows into Bootthathankettu, Idamalayar, Malayatoor, Kalady areas.
