AI to fine traffic violations

Kochi: Beware vehicle users, it is time to maintain discipline on the road, else any minor traffic violation will invite penalties recorded by the Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras in Kerala from today, media reports said.

The month-long countdown ended yesterday, and the execution of the plan begins today.

The AI-enabled cameras will spot traffic violations across the State based on which challans will be sent to those on the wrong side, the reports said.

Control rooms will analyse images based on which legal notices will be sent to traffic violators. A maximum of 25,000 notices can be sent on a single day. Traffic offenses involving helmet, seatbelt, using mobile phones, signal, two wheeler riding restrictions, over speed, parking, will be dealt with in the first phase of implementation, the reports said.

The decision on penalties could be challenged before the enforcement RTO.

On June 2, a total of 2.4 lakh traffic violations were detected.

Out of 726 cameras, 692 cameras are operational, while the remaining will be put in to action soon, the reports said

Certain categories of vehicles can have the privilege to ignore traffic norms under the Central Motor Vehicle Act.

The Congress has accused the government of financial irregularities in the project and has organised protests in front of the 726 AI cameras on Monday.
