Kochi: With rains gaining steam, red alert has been sounded in eight districts even as increase water level in Chalakkudy river is causing concern in Kerala.
Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kannur are the districts put under red alert.
Due to heavy rains in catchment areas of Parambikulam and Peringalkuthu dams, water has been released following which water level in Chalakkudy river has gone up considerably.
Release of water from Parambikulam dam in Tamil Nadu and Thunakadavu dam has led to increased inflow into Peringalkuthu dam.
Release of 16,000 cusecs water from Peringalkuthu dam has triggered rise in water level in Chalakkudy river in Thrissur district.
People are being shifted to relief camps,
Revenue Minister K Rajan told reporters.
Thrissur Collector has appealed to people to co-operate with authorities. Rescue boats are kept ready in the region.
Atleast 469 families were shifted to 1,500 camps. Indian Airforce and Navy have been alerted. NDRF personnel are already in action in the area.
Meanwhile, Orange alert has been sounded in Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasargod.
Cyclonic circulation over bay of Bengal near South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu is expected to bring in more rains in Kerala.
