Kochi: India on Thursday urged Dhaka to expedite nationality verification to repatriate illegal immigrants to Bangladesh.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was responding to Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressing fear over India sending back illegal immigrants to Bangladesh after BJP’s victory in Bengal assembly elections.
Responding to the media, Ahmed said the Border Guard Bangladesh had been asked to “remain alert” along the frontier.
Jaiswal sought cooperation from Dhaka on the issue of repatriation of illegal immigrants to Bangladesh, Times of India reported.
Jaiswal said “We have seen comments of this nature being made in the last several days…”
He said over 2,860 cases of nationality verification were pending with Bangladesh.
