Kochi: Suvendu Adhikari was named as the new Chief Minister of the first BJP government in West Bengal as announced by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday.
Amit Shah announced the name of Adhikari in the BJP legislature party meeting which ratified the decision.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata in the morning as the BJP’s central observer.
Shah visited the Dakshineswar Kali Temple to offer prayers before heading to the Novotel Hotel, where the BJP legislature party meeting was held.

BJP won 207 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.
West Bengal is the birthplace of freedom fighter and Union Minister Shyama Prasad Mukherjee who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh backed by RSS after leaving Hindu Mahasabha.
He resigned from Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet protesting against the Liaquat–Nehru Pact.
