Kochi Corporation goes powerless

Kochi: Power supply to the Kochi Corporation, Fort Kochi office, was snapped by KSEB for failing to pay pending arrears of Rs 2 lakh, media reports said.
This brought to a grinding halt the functioning of the office.
Efforts are on to clear the arrears and restore power supply, Mayor M Anil Kumar said adding that the arrears was not due to shortage of funds but owing to other reasons.
Meanwhile, the KSEB has sought clearance from the government to impose power cuts due to shortage of power.
The KSEB is not able to purchase power from the open market due to financial problems created by many government offices by not paying bills for a long time even as the consumption has hit new heights. Seven hundred transformers have been burnt due to excess load.
The demand is high during peak time.
The KSEB’s decision making body is meeting on Wednesday to discuss the matter.
The consumption touched an all time high of 11.31 crore units yesterday. There has been no power cut in the state since 2016, the reports said.
