Centre acts fast as 14 killed in Nagaland

Kochi: Thirteen civilians and a soldier were killed during anti insurgency operations and resultant public retaliation in Mon district in Nagaland bordering Myanmar.

The security personnel had launched the attack on the basis of an intelligence report, media reports said.

The army has sought apologies for the killings due to mistaken identity. The army is investigating the case, media reports said.

Angry villagers gave vent to their ire by attacking Assam Rifles camp killing one soldier, media reports said.

Protesting against the incident, the irate villagers came out of their houses and torched many army vehicles, the reports said.

The incident occurred when it got information about movement of insurgents following which it launched the attack on a vehicle carrying youth who were returning from work on Saturday evening.

The area is a stronghold of Yung Aung faction (NSCN-K) faction which also has a base in neighbouring Myanmar. ULFA is also active in the area.

Mobile internet service and SMS have been blocked.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah in his tweet expressed deep condolences on the matter and said the state government will set up a special investigation team to probe the case.
