Kochi: Droupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of the country at the Central Hall of the Parliament today.
Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office to 64-year-old Murmu who became the youngest person to occupy the highest constitutional post.
She is the first tribal and the second woman to hold the top constitutional post. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, members of council of ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, MPs and principal civil and military officers were present at the ceremony.
Droupadi Murmu, hailing from Odisha, defeated Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha to become the President. She was the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.
Murmu joined the BJP in Rairangpur in 1997 she was elected as the councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She became an MLA in Odisha in 2000 and 2009 from Rairangpur Assembly constituency.
She was a minister in Odisha from 2000 to 2004.
