Kochi: Three persons were killed and 36 injured in a temple festival when two elephants ran amok at Koyilandy in Kozhikode district in Kerala on Thursday.
Ammukkutty, 70, Leela, 65, and Rajan, 70, reportedly fell on the ground in the mele
and sustained grave head injuries during the festival at Manakkulangara Bhagavathi Temple at Kuruvangad, near Koyilandy around 5.30 p.m.
The elephants got scared hearing the sound of firecrackers.
One of the elephants reportedly tusked the other elephant adding to more problems.
The injured were taken to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital. Seven of them, including a 10-year-old girl, were found to be very critical.
Many of the injured were admitted to the Koyilandy taluk hospital. It took around two hours to bring the two tuskers Peethambaran and Gokul under control..The elephants did not attack the crowd. There was a similar incident in the temple compound in 2016.
