Kochi: BJP-ruled states are mulling to set up detention centres to hold up illegal immigrants even as Assam has done it while the West Bengal government has started it, media reports said.
The West Bengal government has directed the authorities in 23 districts to establish holding centres for housing detained illegal immigrants.
This is part of the newly elected BJP government’s decision to execute its electoral promise to deport Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas on the guidelines of Union Home Ministry.
The Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced to implement the BJP’s poll promise to “detect, delete and deport” illegal infiltrators.
West Bengal becomes the second BJP-ruled state after Assam to establish such facilities. The Union Home Ministry had issued guidelines on 2 May 2025 mandate all state governments/Union Territory administrations to set up holding centres in each district under their police to detain illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
