Kochi: It took over half a century for the Congress to share power in Tamil Nadu where it is backing a minority government.
The grand old party had to wait for 59 years to join the TVK government led by actor turned Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, NDTV reported.
Two Congress MLAs will take oath as ministers tomorrow, senior party leader K C Venugopal, MP, said in a post on X. “Kharge has approved the induction of INC MLAs Adv Rajesh Kumar and Thiru P Vishwanathan into the Tamil Nadu cabinet… This is a historic occasion for us, as the Congress joins the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years!” he said.
The Congress, which was an ally of DMK
for over a decade, severed ties with the Dravidian party to support Vijay’s minority government.
Earlier today, the ruling TVK had invited allies to become part of Vijay’s cabinet. O P Ramaswamy Reddiyar led the first Congress government as the first Premier of Madras Province from 1947 to 1949 followed by P S Kumaraswami Raja who was the last premier from 1949 and 1952 of the province which became Madras state. C Rajagopalachari was the first Chief Minister from 1952 to 1954, K Kamaraj from 1954 to 1963 and the last Congress government led by M Bhaktavatsalam from 1963 to 1967.
