Kochi: Situation in Malayalam film industry is getting critical with more cases of sexual abuse popping up against actors with the latest being against Nivin Pauly on Tuesday, media reports said. Police booked a rape case against the actor on a complaint by a 40-year-old woman who accused him sexually assaulting her in Dubai a few months ago, the reports said. Cases including section 376 under the IPC were registered against him. There are six accused in the case. Earlier, 17 sexual harassment cases were registered against actors including noted including M Mukesh, MLA, of CPM, Jayasurya, Siddique, director Ranjith after a Committee headed by Justice (Rtd) Hema published a report about the deplorable condition of women artists in Malayalam film industry.
This led to chaos in the industry culminating in the dissolution of its governing actors outfit Association of Malayalam Movie Artists’ (AMMA) governing body.Actresses Sonia Malhaar, Minu MuneerBengali star Sreelekha Mitra, were among those who have lodged their complaints.The three-member Justice Hema Committee, which was set up in 2017, submitted its report in 2019. The report was released a few days back. The committee was formed on the basis of the demand by WCC which was formed by artists who quit AMMA which failed to support the a leading actress who was abducted and abused on February 17, 2017, in which actor Dileep is an accused.
