Kochi: In a setback to Kerala, the Supreme Court has rejected the state’s prayer to form a committee to decide on the release of water by Tamil Nadu from the Mullaperiyar dam.
The Apex Court directed Kerala to take up the matter before the Apex Committee on Mullaperiyar.
On Kerala’s complaint that the Apex Committee was not acting on its complaint, the Supreme Court directed the committee to look into it.
The court said that Kerala had its member in the committee and it was the member’s duty to raise Kerala’s concern with the committee.
The court flayed Kerala for rushing to the court on a regular basis regarding the dam.
The two states might be facing political pressure on the dam and the court was not a place to settle inter state rivalry.
Kerala had appealed to the court to direct Tamil Nadu to inform Kerala 24 hours in advance before the release of water.
The court will further hear the case on January 11.
