TN opposes dams at Mullai, Mekedatu

Kochi: Tamil Nadu will block any new construction or safety breaches by Kerala at the Mullaperiyar Dam and it is against Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu Dam project, Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar said in his policy speech.
Delivering the Governor’s customary address at the 17th Legislative Assembly, Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, said the state government is taking “necessary legal measures” to suspend Karnataka’s move to build the Mekedatu dam, media reports said.
The state had to struggle every year to get Cauvery water despite the Supreme Court upholding Tamil Nadu’s claims. The farmers of Cauvery delta region depend on Cauvery water as the main water source of the delta districts, Arlekar said. This Government is taking necessary legal measures to halt this and to get water for Tamil Nadu at the right time, the Governor said.
The State government will oppose Kerala’s proposal for a new Mullaperiyar dam. The Supreme Court has ruled to raise further to 152 feet after dam strengthening which the Government of Kerala is not allowing, he said.
The Government will take firm measures to prevent the Government of Kerala’s attempt to build a new dam. Tamil Nadu will take concerted action to carry out repair works in the Mullaperiyar dam area and raise the water level of the dam, Arlekar stated.
The Tamil Nadu Government will make intensive efforts to implement the river-interlinking project, he said.
